Professional Editing

As a sensitive and discerning guide, I support writers who understand the vulnerability of putting their lives on the page. Together, we’ll create a process that feels grounded, respectful, and generative, so your work can move toward clarity, integrity, and publication.
In our 1:1 session, I will:
Help you clarify the core of your project (poem, essay, first pages of a manuscript)—what it’s truly about beneath the surface;
Offer line-level and structural feedback to strengthen voice, flow, and emotional impact;
Identify what’s working and what’s getting in the way, with precise, actionable direction;
Guide you through ethical and emotional considerations when writing about real people and lived experience;
Provide next-step strategy for revision, submission, or publishing (Substack, literary journals, or personal platforms).
We’ll meet via Zoom for one hour.

If you need help sculpting the narrative arc of your manuscript or piecing together essays into a cohesive book, I'm happy to guide you through that by offering fresh eyes to your creative work.
As a prolific reader with a discerning eye, I can spot redundancies and shifts in verb tense, plus areas where important information might be helpful.
My pricing is unique to each project, so please let me know how long your manuscript is and what it is you are hoping to achieve through developmental editing.
Cost is estimated on a case by case basis, as all manuscripts are in different stages and subsequently need varying amounts of time devoted to them.
Developmental editing asks the question, “What is this book, and how does it work?” It’s about big picture, structure, and organization.
-
If you’re looking for improving clarity, flow, and cohesion within pieces;
strengthening openings, endings, and internal structure;
reducing repetition and tightening language;
aligning tone and voice across the manuscript; and
making line-level revisions (light to moderate),
then you may need what’s called content editing. The cost of this service varies, based on length and involvement of your project.
Content editing differs from developmental editing, because it asks, “How can I improve what’s already on the page to make it better?”
-
If you want a feedback for an essay, short story, or manuscript that includes careful proofreading and line edits, I offer a keen eye to point out typos, misspellings, commonly misused words or phrases, and the occasional extra comma or missing period. Because each project is unique, we can discuss your specific project and I will give you a fair estimate of the total cost once I hear from you. Cost is $30/hour. For a 50,000 word manuscript, generally the total cost will be $350.

For writers who want to approach Substack in a way that feels spacious, honest, and sustainable, this session offers a grounded introduction and thoughtful guidance, without pressure to perform or conform.
Whether you’re new to the platform or rethinking your presence there, I’ll help you engage Substack as a tool that supports your creative work, rather than shaping it.
In our 1:1 session, I will:
Offer a clear, non-overwhelming overview of Substack—what it is, how it functions, and how writers are using it;
Help you discern how (or if) Substack fits your creative life, based on your values, energy, and season;
Walk through the core features and setup in a way that feels intuitive and manageable, not technical or rushed;
Explore how to cultivate meaningful, reciprocal relationships with your readers, rather than chasing growth;
Support you in defining a sustainable, self-trusting approach to showing up and sharing your work.
We’ll meet via Zoom for one hour.
Testimonials
“Jeannie has been my editor since 2016, working across two genres. In that time, she has edited more than twenty-five full-length books. She is professional, flexible, and easy to work with, consistently returning manuscripts ahead of schedule. I highly recommend Jeannie to any author looking to enhance the quality of their writing.”
“As an editor, Jeannie is both disciplined and fluid. I appreciate her openness to both strengths and weaknesses with a hard lean toward strengths, plus she’s deeply encouraging.”
“Jeannie has great composition and editing prowess. For a personal letter, Jeannie was able to help me land the plane after I kept circling the airport with abstract thoughts and ideas. She helped me identify and clarify my voice.”
Mentorships
Mentorship is a collaborative relationship rooted in curiosity, encouragement, and gentle accountability. I work alongside writers, creatives, and seekers who want to move through self-doubt, grief, or creative blocks and return to a sense of meaning in their work and life.
It’s not about fixing or performing—it’s about being met where you are. Together, we explore your creative process, clarify your voice, and build confidence in your work and purpose.
I combine the skill set acquired from my training as a school counselor of encouraging others in self-advocacy with my ten years of working as a professional writer and editor to hold space for your needs, honoring the mind/body/spirit connection.
